Hoarseness & Voice Changes

Is Your Voice Not Sounding Like It Used To?

Persistent hoarseness or voice changes may be more than just strain — they can signal underlying throat or vocal cord issues. At ENT Sinus Center of Orlando, we evaluate and treat voice disorders to help you speak and sound like yourself again.

  • Hoarseness is any abnormal change in your voice — from a raspy or breathy tone to complete voice loss. While temporary hoarseness is common after a cold or yelling, voice changes that last more than 2–3 weeks should be evaluated by a specialist.
Voice changes can be caused by:● Irritation or inflammation of the vocal cords (larynx)● Nodules, polyps, or lesions on the cords● Nerve injury or reflux● Overuse or misuse of the voice

  • ● Raspy, weak, or breathy voice● Voice that tires easily● Pitch changes● Loss of vocal range (especially for singers)● Throat tightness or discomfort while speaking● Frequent need to clear the throat● Loss of voice after short periods of talking

  • ● Vocal cord strain or overuse (teachers, singers, public speakers)● Upper respiratory infections● Acid reflux (LPR or GERD)● Allergies or postnasal drip● Smoking or exposure to irritants● Benign growths (nodules, cysts, or polyps)● Neurological conditions or vocal cord paralysis● Throat or laryngeal cancer (less common but serious)

  • You should see an ENT if:● Your hoarseness lasts longer than 2–3 weeks● You experience pain or trouble swallowing● Your voice cuts out or disappears during use● You’re a vocal professional with ongoing issues● You’ve had recent surgery or trauma to the neck

  • We begin with a thorough medical history and may perform:● Laryngoscopy: a small camera to view the vocal cords directly● Stroboscopy: advanced imaging to assess cord movement● Voice evaluation with speech therapy if needed

  • ● Voice rest and hydration● Speech therapy to improve vocal technique and reduce strain● Treatment of underlying conditions (e.g., reflux, allergies)● Surgical removal of growths if needed● Botox injections for vocal cord spasms or tremors (in select cases)
Our goal is to restore your natural voice and prevent long-term damage.
