Persistent Nasal Blockage? Nasal Polyps Could Be the Cause

Soft, painless growths in the nasal passages can block airflow, affect your sense of smell, and lead to recurring sinus infections. At ENT Sinus Center of Orlando, we diagnose and treat nasal polyps with both medical and minimally invasive surgical options.

  • Nasal polyps are noncancerous, teardrop-shaped growths that form in the lining of your nasal passages or sinuses. While small polyps may cause no symptoms, larger ones—or clusters—can block airflow, reduce your sense of smell, and contribute to chronic sinus infections.
They’re often associated with inflammation from:
    ● Chronic sinusitis● Allergies● Asthma● Aspirin sensitivity

  • You may have nasal polyps if you’re experiencing:
    ● Persistent nasal congestion● Runny nose or postnasal drip● Decreased or lost sense of smell● Facial pressure or pain● Snoring or sleep disturbances● Frequent sinus infections

  • The exact cause isn’t always clear, but nasal polyps often develop in response to long-term inflammation. People with the following conditions are more likely to develop them:
    ● Chronic rhinosinusitis● Allergic fungal sinusitis● Asthma● Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD)● Cystic fibrosis (in children)

  • At our practice, we use a combination of:● Nasal endoscopy – a small camera inserted into the nasal passages● CT scan – to assess the extent and location of the polyps● Allergy testing – if allergies may be a contributing factor

  • We focus on relieving your symptoms and reducing polyp size or regrowth through:
    Non-Surgical Options:
    ● Nasal corticosteroid sprays (first-line treatment)● Oral or injectable steroids (for severe symptoms)● Allergy management if applicable
    Surgical Treatment:
If polyps are large or don’t respond to medication, endoscopic sinus surgery may be recommended. This outpatient procedure removes the polyps and clears sinus blockages — often improving symptoms significantly.

  • If you’ve been struggling with nasal congestion that doesn’t improve, or experience repeated sinus infections, nasal polyps may be the underlying cause. Our ENT specialists can diagnose the issue and tailor a treatment plan that gets you breathing easier.
