Pediatric Nosebleeds (Epistaxis)

Frequent Nosebleeds in Your Child? We Can Help.

While occasional nosebleeds are common in children, frequent or heavy nosebleeds may be a sign of an underlying issue. At ENT Sinus Center of Orlando, we diagnose and treat pediatric nosebleeds with gentle, effective care to keep your child safe and comfortable.

  • A nosebleed, or epistaxis, happens when the blood vessels inside the nose break and bleed. In children, most nosebleeds come from the front of the nose (anterior nosebleeds), where blood vessels are close to the surface and easily irritated.

While usually not serious, frequent or unexplained nosebleeds should be evaluated by a specialist — especially if they disrupt sleep or daily activities.

  • Dry indoor air or sudden temperature changes● Frequent nose blowing or picking● Allergies causing nasal irritation● Upper respiratory infections (colds or sinus infections)● Nasal trauma or injury● Structural issues (e.g., deviated septum)● Use of certain medications (e.g., nasal sprays or blood thinners)● Underlying bleeding disorders (less common, but important to rule out)

  • Contact an ENT if your child:● Has nosebleeds several times a week● Wakes up during the night with bleeding● Experiences bleeding from both nostrils at once● Has nosebleeds that last longer than 10–15 minutes● Has a history of easy bruising or other bleeding issues

  • Our ENT specialists will:● Review your child’s medical history and nosebleed frequency● Examine the nasal passages with a nasal speculum or endoscope● Check for signs of irritation, infection, or abnormal anatomy● Recommend testing if a bleeding disorder is suspected

  • At-Home Management:● Use saline nasal sprays or humidifiers to keep nasal passages moist● Teach children to avoid nose picking or rubbing● Apply petroleum jelly gently inside the nostrils (as directed)
In-Office Treatments:● Cauterization: Seals off the bleeding vessel using a safe chemical or electrical device● Nasal packing: Used for more serious bleeding● Allergy or infection treatment to reduce nasal inflammation
For Chronic Nosebleeds:● Evaluation for structural issues like a deviated septum● Referral for hematology evaluation if a clotting disorder is suspected

  • ● Use a cool-mist humidifier in dry weather● Keep nails trimmed and discourage nose picking● Avoid overuse of decongestant sprays● Use saline sprays or rinses regularly during allergy or cold seasons
